Trailing Slashes and Case
/about and /about/ are technically different URLs. Pick one, 301 the other, and make the CMS enforce it. On Apache:

Fix this at the server, not with tags. Pick one hostname and one protocol, then 301 everything else:

Set the same preference in Google Search Console’s domain settings. A canonical pointing at a host that 301s is a canonical pointing at a redirect — search engines treat that as a conflict.
URL Parameters: Tracking, Sorting, Filtering
The biggest generator of duplicate URLs on e-commerce and content sites. ?utm_source, ?sort=price_asc, ?color=blue, ?page=2 all produce distinct URLs serving largely the same content.
The fix has three layers:
- GSC parameter handling. In Google Search Console → URL Parameters, mark tracking parameters as “doesn’t change page content” so Google stops wasting crawls on them.
- Canonical to the clean URL. Strip parameters in the canonical tag so all variants consolidate to the base page.

For years the fix was rel="prev"/rel="next". Google deprecated those in 2019. Current guidance: keep pages crawlable, link the series clearly, and let Google treat the sequence as one entity via internal linking and a self-referencing canonical on each page. Don’t noindex paginated pages — that can hurt coverage for long-tail queries.
Printer-Friendly, AMP, and Syndicated Copies
Printer views: one canonical to the main article, and let CSS handle print styling instead. AMP: the AMP page canonicalizes to the canonical page and vice-versa. Syndication: canonical back to the original publisher, or the original publisher canonicalizes to you — pick one direction and state it in the article.
International Versions
If you serve multiple languages or regions, canonical and hreflang interact under strict rules: the canonical and the hreflang group must agree. Each language version self-references its own canonical, and hreflang alternates list all versions. A canonical pointing at a different language version, or an hreflang set that omits the canonical URL, sends conflicting signals that can collapse the entire group.
